The Warning Flags I Wish I’d Respected Sooner
Training-data patterns that often show up before setbacks — load spikes, stacked hard days, and pain you rationalize — and how I respond earlier now.
Patterns, not prophecies
No chart predicts injury with certainty. Patterns still help. Rapid mileage jumps, hard days stacked without recovery, and training through sharp pain show up in a lot of stories that end on the couch.
I treat flags as reasons to adjust early — not as destiny, and not as proof I’m fragile.
Mechanical pain is not a personality test
Soreness that fades with warm-up differs from sharp, worsening, or joint-local pain. Persistent issues deserve rest and professional evaluation. “Not losing fitness” is how layoffs get longer.
Sports medicine guidance is consistent here even when online advice isn’t: early care beats bravado.
What I do when the log looks angry
If load spiked and sleep tanked, I cut intensity before I cut all movement. If pain is sharp, I stop the experiment. The goal of a training block is to arrive at the start line able to race — not to win the month on a calendar heatmap.
